Painting No - 01

House of Bawa Dinga Singh is located on McLeod Road in front of Moonlight Cinema (formerly Qaiser and originally Majestic). It is a large building forming a Katri which has a large wooden Jharoka with balconies on the sides. A corrugated tin sheet forms roof for these projections. An intricate wood carving has been applied to the arched windows and pillars. A large entrance arch gives access to the courtyard where one finds the same Jharoka repeated in the rear. The staircase shown on the left is in fact from the courtyard giving access to the upper stories shared by many families. Syed Pervaiz Hussain lives in the ground storey while one Mr. Janjwa living in the upper storey. The occupants have tried to retain and repair the premises in original shape. This building has been tastefully decorated with stained glass tiles having relied motifs. The fireplaces too are very interesting.
Bawan Dinga Singh built this building probably in 1910’s. He built for himself a bungalow in the front which still bears a marble plaque to his name. This now houses “Sir Syed School”. Dinga Singh was a wealthy timber merchant. He also built in 1927 an impressive building on the Mall. (See Painting No. 59)
